FROM: | William C. Bosher, Jr.
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Guidelines: The Wearing of School Uniforms in Public Schools |
The 1995 General Assembly enacted Section 22.1-79.2 of the Code of Virginia which indicates that upon approval by the Board of the model guidelines, local boards may establish requirements, consistent with the Board's guidelines, for the students enrolled in any of the schools to wear uniforms while in attendance at such school, during the regular school day. The referenced guidelines are enclosed. A copy of this memorandum, as well as a copy of the guidelines, will be mailed directly to your board chairperson. At approximately the same time Virginia's guidelines were being completed, the federal government issued similar guidelines. As a means of providing additional assistance, we have included a copy for your reference. If you have questions related to the development of the guidelines or a need for additional information, please contact Jim Heywood, Director of Elementary and Middle School Services at (804) 225-2865. /atb Enclosures: This memo and its enclosures will be sent to the superintendent's office. c: Local Board Chairperson
