SUBJECT: Report of Teacher Salary Survey

  
  Data was collected on Administrative Supts. Memo. No. 56,
  dated August 16, 1996, on average classroom teacher salaries
  for 1996-97.  No mandate to raise teacher salaries was
  included in the Appropriations Act for the 1996-97 school
  year.  The General Assembly specified that the average
  classroom teacher salary continues to be the measure for
  comparison of Virginia with other states at the national
  level.
  
  The attached report has been provided to the Chairman of the
  State Board of Education.  The General Assembly has
  supported the goal of Virginia's average classroom teacher
  salary reaching the national average.
