Final FY 1997 School Division Allocations, Application, and 1996-97
School Division Progress Report for Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act |
Enclosed you will find the final FY 1997 allocation tables for local school divisions under Title IV: Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) of 1994. The purpose of the legislation is to support programs that prevent violence and promote school safety; that prevent the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, involve parents, and are coordinated with related Federal, State, and community efforts and resources through the provision of Federal financial assistance. The Commonwealth of Virginia will receive funds as follows: Governor's Share (20%) $1,912,004 Virginia Department of Education (80%) $7,648,015 Total Virginia Allotment $9,650,019 Virginia Department of Education: Programs and administration $ 688,322 School Divisions (70% - Entitlement) $ 4,871,785 School Divisions (30% - Greatest Need) $ 2,087,908 Total to Virginia Department of Education $ 7,648,015 The FY 1997 funds (70%) will be distributed on the basis of the most recent public and private school Average Daily Membership (ADM) figures. The fourteen school divisions determined to have the "greatest need" for additional funds (30%) to carry out drug and violence prevention programs will be receiving individual letters of notification from Dr. Richard T. La Pointe, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. It will be necessary for local school divisions to submit either a consolidated application amendment or an individual application. If the school division elects to submit an individual application, the original and one copy of the application must be submitted to the Department of Education, on or before August 8, 1997. The applications will undergo a peer review and approval process the week of August 18-22, 1997. The 1996-97 Progress Report is also enclosed. The information requested in the report is identical to the 1995-96 Progress Report. The original and one copy of the report is due to the Department of Education, on or before August 8, 1997.
