SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 10
January 24, 1997 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Requirement for a Social Security Number |
As you know, Section 22.1-260 of the Code of Virginia requires all students enrolled in public schools to have a federal social security number. The amendment to the Code was effective July 1, 1988. This memorandum is being sent at the request of the Social Security Administration as a reminder that certain aliens are not eligible for social security numbers. The attached flyer, furnished by the Social Security Administration, provides information relative to this topic. In 1988, the Board of Education adopted Guidelines for Administering the Requirements for Public School Students to Obtain a Social Security Number. Those guidelines are being reviewed and may be revised to reflect changes in federal law. Questions regarding the information in this memorandum may be directed to Charles W. Finley, Policy Associate, Division of Policy and Public Affairs, at (804) 225-2747. Legal issues should be discussed with your school board attorney. RTL/cwf Attachment: This memo and its attachment will be sent to the superintendent's office.
