SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 55
March 28, 1997 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Instructional Resources Trade Shows |
The results of the Virginia Department of Education's Standards of Learning Survey that was completed by school divisions in the fall of 1996 indicate a need for awareness of instructional materials that are correlated with the Standards of Learning for English, history and the social sciences, mathematics, and science. In anticipation of funds budgeted by the General Assembly for instructional resources, three one-day regional Instructional Resources Trade Shows will be sponsored by the Virginia Education Association, the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the Virginia Department of Education. These shows are specifically designed to highlight instructional materials that support the Virginia Standards of Learning in the four core curriculum areas for grades K-12. Attached is a schedule indicating the dates, times, and locations of the trade shows. Each of the three shows will be held from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Teams of six teachers and instructional leaders from each school division are invited to attend the shows from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Beginning at 2:30 P.M. and continuing until 6:00 P.M., the shows will be open to all interested teachers and instructional leaders. It is expected that approximately 40 vendors will be represented at these shows. The vendors have been asked to concentrate their materials on areas of critical need in English, history and the social sciences, mathematics, and science. Those areas of critical need are included as an attachment to this memorandum. I hope that all school divisions will take advantage of this opportunity to have staff review instructional materials that may be appropriate to address instructional resource needs. Those wishing to participate should identify six people from their school division to attend one of the trade shows and send their names and addresses on the attached reservation form by April 30, 1997, to Robert A. Almond, Associate Director, Vocational Education and Employment Training Services, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120. Additional information will be mailed to the respective team members upon receipt of the reservation form. Questions regarding the Instructional Resources Trade Shows should be directed to Mrs. Phyllis Ayers, English Specialist for the Department of Education. She can be reached by calling (804) 371-7585.
