FROM: | Richard T. La Pointe
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Selection of Literacy Media for Students with Visual Impairments |
We are pleased to send you a copy of the publication Selection of Literacy Media for Students with Visual Impairments published under the leadership of the Virginia Department of Education in collaboration with the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped. This document was developed as a result of changes in the Code of Virginia (section 22.1-217) which specifies that when developing the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students with visual impairments, proficiency in literacy is essential for such students to achieve satisfactory educational progress. A document of this nature has been requested by administrators, teachers, and parents in order to assist IEP committees in making informed decisions about appropriate literacy media for students with visual impairments. This document is available in adapted formats (i.e.: braille, large print, electronic). Questions about this document, or requests for adapted formats, may be referred to Dr. Patricia Abrams, Associate Director, Office of Special Education and Student Services, at 804-225-2707. For technical assistance in selecting appropriate literacy media for students, contact the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped regional education coordinator or Mr. Glen Slonneger at the state office 804-371-3113 (see attached list).
