The 1997 General Assembly, through the Appropriation Act, Item 131 P. directed the Superintendent of Public Instruction in cooperation with the Commissioner of Social Services to ...encourage local departments of social services and local school divisions to work together to explore the feasibility of cooperative arrangements for the use of school resources, especially computer labs, for the training Temporary Assistance in Needy Families recipients for the workforce....jointly report on the progress of this initiative to the Chairmen of House Appropriations, House Education, House Health, Welfare and Institutions, Senate Finance, Senate Education and Health, and Senate Rehabilitation and Social Services Committees by January 1, 1998. By this memo, I am requesting that you discuss such cooperative arrangements with your building principals to determine (1) if any such partnerships currently exist in your school division and (2) whether or not it would be feasible to establish such a cooperative arrangement for the benefit of your local community. Further, I am requesting that you call Dr. Jack Moye, a field services representative with the Department, no later than December 5, 1997 to provide him with information concerning cooperative arrangements currently in existence in your division, as well as instances in which there is an expressed interest in establishing such cooperative arrangements. Dr. Moye can be reached at (804) 392-9317. Your assistance in providing the information to assist us in meeting this requirement is greatly appreciated. RTL/da
