SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 7
February 13, 1998 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Jo Lynne Demary, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Title I School Improvement Funds |
Attached is a listing of certain school divisions and the amount of School Improvement Funds allocated under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended by the Improving America's Schools Act of 1994, Part A of Public Law (P.L.)103-382. These supplementary appropriations are in addition to the Basic Title I Maximum Authorization and the Supplementary Concentration Grants available in the 1997-98 school year and are provided for those schools within the division that have been identified for School Improvement based on 1995-96 and 1996-97 data. School Improvement funds are to be used in a manner consistent with the attached description of use of funds and consistent with the earlier signed "Intent to Expend School Improvement Funds", which reflected the guidelines. It should be noted that the primary use of School Improvement funds is to assist with the establishment of School Support Teams. The State also intends to allocate additional School Improvement funds to localities for schools identified for School Improvement based on 1996-97 and 1997-98 data. Each year, the Title I Office examines individual school data, based on a process outilined in the School Improvement Process, to determine which schools should receive funds. You are requested to complete the attached Application for School Improvement Assistance Funds and send it to Brenda A. Spencer, Specialist, Title 1, Office of Compensatory Programs, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120, by March 31, 1998. Separate accounting is required for these funds. Reimbursement requests should be marked "School Improvement Funds 96-4" and should also be sent to the above person and address. All reimbursement requests must be received by June 30, 1998. These particular funds cannot be carried over to the 1998-99 school year. If you should have any questions, please contact George H. Irby, Director, Office of Compensatory Programs at (804) 225-2869 or Brenda Spencer at (804) 371-6201 or 225-2910. You may also use the following e-mail address: baspence@pen.k12.va.us.
