SUBJECT: | Elementary Keyboarding Staff Development Materials |
A video series Methods of Teaching Elementary Keyboarding" will be available from the Department of Education after February 10. This four program video series is designed to assist with staff development for elementary and middle school faculty who are involved in teaching touch typing (keyboarding) to students. The series is based on guidelines found in the Department's K-12 Keyboarding, A Position Paper" which has been widely distributed since its development in 1990. The series, a joint production of the Offices of Vocational and Adult Education and Instructional Media and Training, should be used to update your division instructional technology plans for in-service initiatives that address the Virginia Standards of Learning, Computer/Technology Standards for grade five (specifically C/T 5.2 Develop Basic Keyboarding Skills"). The series will be featured each Thursday (2:00 to 3:00 pm) as a part of the March, 1998, DOE Staff Development Hour Broadcast Calendar. It can also be obtained from the Department's Production Services using normal tape duplication procedures (school personnel should order through their media specialists). Enclosed is a form to use when ordering a participant packet" of materials (one per school). These materials are to be duplicated and used with the video series when conducing staff development sessions. A complimentary copy of the grade appropriate keyboarding textbook used in the video series is also available upon request (one per school division). The textbook is an example of the type of instructional material that will greatly facilitate a recommended teacher guided instructional unit in elementary and middle school keyboarding. If additional information is needed, please contact Anne Rowe at (804) 225-2838, Office of Vocational and Adult Education Services or Gordon Creasy, Office of Instructional Media and Training at (804) 225-4430.
