SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 57
April 17, 1998 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Operation Spruce-Up Public Television Broadcast |
The students and staff in your division are invited to spend a morning with Governor Gilmore. On May 5th, from 10 to 11 a.m., Governor Jim Gilmore will be joining Virginia's classrooms via the state's public television stations as part of the statewide environmental campaign, Operation Spruce-Up. The Governor's lesson plan will be geared toward fourth graders and will explore several conservation Standards of Learning such as the interaction between man and his environment. The lesson will be illustrated with video footage and perhaps even a special guest from the wilds of Virginia. The broadcast will originate from the classroom studio at Varina High School in the Governor's home county. All classes statewide are encouraged to tune in. In addition, eight fourth grade classes from across the Commonwealth will be connected to the Varina site via telephone and will be able to ask the Governor questions. This marks the first time that a Virginia Governor has participated in a statewide, interactive classroom experience. More details about this program will be provided in a future Superintendent's memo closer to the broadcast date. PDS/emt Enclosures: A hard copy of this memo and its enclosures will be sent to the superintendent's office
