SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 111
July 31, 1998 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Registration of 18-Year-Old Males with Selective Service |
As you know, federal law requires that all 18-year-old males register with Selective Service. Individuals who fail to register with Selective Service lose their rights to HOPE Scholarships, federal grants, and federal jobs. According to Selective Service officials, 52 percent of Virginia high schools have appointed registrars to help with the process for registration. I sincerely hope that each high school principal will appoint a person in his or her school to provide the assistance needed for Selective Service registration. Materials needed for registration will be provided by Selective Service officials along with a Selective Service Form 402 to be completed by the person appointed as the registrar. Additional information may be obtained from Brig. Gen. Manuel R. Flores, Virginia state director of Selective Service, at (804) 748-6912, or by writing to the Region II Selective Service Office, 803 Walker Street, Marietta, Georgia, 30060-2731, or by calling (770) 590-6602.
