TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Observation Opportunities Available from the Improving Special Education Experiences (ISEE) Project |
I am pleased to inform you of an opportunity for school personnel to strengthen special education service delivery by visiting one of seven demonstration schools. This opportunity is being offered through the Improving Special Education Experiences (ISEE) project, an interagency initiative of the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (VBPD) and the Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities (VIDD) at Virginia Commonwealth University, in collaboration with the Virginia Department of Education. This initiative seeks to improve the experiences of students, parents, and school personnel related to the delivery of special education services. One of the activities of the ISEE Project is to support several demonstration sites. During the past two school years, more than 100 school teams have visited one of the ISEE demonstration sites. During the 1998-99 school year, additional school teams are invited to visit these ISEE demonstration schools to learn about their delivery of special education services, to interact with their staffs, and to use these sites as resources for improving special education service delivery. Visiting school teams are offered a stipend of $250 to assist with the cost of such visits. The attached flyer outlines information about these demonstration opportunities and how schools can participate and obtain stipends. Please pass this information along to your schools. If you need additional information, contact Melanie Sterling, ISEE Project Director, Virginia Institute for Developmental Disabilities, Virginia Commonwealth University, at (804) 827-0197.
