INFORMATIONAL

  Administrative Supts. Memo. No. 59, dated August 28, 1998,
  requested each school division to provide information on
  average classroom teacher salaries for 1998-99.  The
  attached report reflects the data submitted to the
  Department of Education.    

  A salary increase for teachers is not mandated for the
  1998-99 school year; however, a supplement of 2.25%
  effective January 1, 1999, was appropriated and is
  available to school divisions that agree to provide an
  equivalent salary increase.  The General Assembly also
  specified that the average classroom teachers' salary
  continues to be the measure for comparison of Virginia with
  other states at the national level.

  The attached report has been provided to the chairman of
  the House Appropriations and Senate Finance Committees and
  to the State Board of Education.  Please review the
