SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 40
February 26, 1999 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | The School Administrator's Handbook of Course Codes, Position Codes, and Licensure Codes |
The Department of Education will disseminate a copy of the School Administrator's Handbook of Course Codes, Position Codes, and Licensure Codes to each central office and each school principal. The publication is produced in such a manner that it can be separated and reproduced to make unlimited copies for your use at the local level. The School Administrator's Handbook of Course Codes, Position Codes, and Licensure Endorsement Codes serves as a resource to school administrators, superintendents, directors of personnel, principals, and others who are responsible for developing programs of study and employing and scheduling school personnel. The purpose of this handbook is twofold: (a) help school division personnel determine the correct and appropriate licensure endorsement(s) for each teacher and staff assignment, and (b) provide school personnel with guidance in determining course offerings for their students. The courses listed in this document are intended to reflect what is currently taught in many of Virginia's public schools. A separate section is included that lists core Standards of Learning courses, which were approved by the Board of Education in February 1998, to satisfy graduation requirements. In the other discipline areas, new courses and codes have been added while those that were obsolete and/or infrequently used have been eliminated from the handbook. Some course titles have been changed to more accurately reflect current terminology and course content. Questions regarding course codes may be directed to the Office of Secondary Instructional Services at (804) 225- 2877. Questions regarding licensure endorsement codes may be directed to personnel in the Division of Teacher Education and Licensure at (804) 225-2022. Questions concerning the content of specific courses should be directed to the appropriate Department of Education content area specialists. PDS/eh
