SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 142
July 16, 1999 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | Paul D. Stapleton
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | School/Community Health Services Grants |
Since 1992, fifty-two local school divisions have received grants from funds appropriated by the General Assembly to provide health services to school-age children. The 1999 General Assembly appropriated $300,000 for at least six additional pilots for the first year of a two-year project. The first year award is for planning. Funding for the second year, which is for implementation, is contingent upon approval by the 2000 General Assembly. The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services are jointly issuing a request for proposals for the planning and implementation of the school/community health services projects. Planning grants of up to $50,000 will be made to selected projects for the period January 2000, to June 30, 2000. Planning sites will be eligible to receive up to $200,000 in implementation funds for the period July 1, 2000, to June 30, 2001, if appropriated in the 2000-2002 biennial budget by the General Assembly. To be eligible, a school division must be, or agree to become, a Medicaid provider approved by the Department of Medical Assistance Services and must participate in the Medicaid billing program for special education and health services. Grant applications may be obtained in hard copy or on disk from Gwen Smith, school health specialist. Applications must be submitted to the Department of Education by October 15, 1999. The final selection process will be completed by December 17, 1999, with grant awards in January 2000.
