SUPTS. MEMO. NO. 223
December 17, 1999 |
TO: | Division Superintendents |
FROM: | JoLynne DeMary Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: | Regional K-5 Mathematics Training Opportunities on Instructional Strategies for Teaching Students with Mathematics Learning Problems |
Are you looking for instructional strategies to use when teaching students who are at-risk of achieving the K-5 Mathematics Standards of Learning? The Virginia Department of Education has sponsored the development of a video/CD-ROM titled MathVIDS (Allsopp, Ingram, and Kyger, 1999), which demonstrates effective instructional strategies for students who have problems learning mathematics. Regional institutes will be offered this winter to train trainers to use MathVIDS. One copy of MathVIDS will also be sent to each school housing K-5 students in February 2000. The purpose of these Standards of Learning institutes is to train trainers within the school divisions to use MathVIDS. These trainers will provide help on MathVIDS to teachers within the school division who teach students who have difficulty learning mathematics. You are invited to send a team of two to three individuals who will serve as trainers from your school division to attend a training institute in your part of the state. It is recommended that these individuals represent mathematics specialists or math lead teachers, Title I mathematics coordinators or teachers, and special education directors or teachers. The institute participants will be provided with information, materials, activities, and the CD-ROM that may be used to train other school personnel. The institutes are being sponsored through the Virginia Department of Education's Technical Assistance Centers (T/TAC). The dates, times, sites, and MathVIDS contacts for the institutes are listed below. There is no charge for participation in the institutes; however, school divisions will need to pay for travel costs and substitutes, as appropriate. Local Eisenhower funds or SOL Training Initiative funds may be used to cover these costs. School division registration forms are attached to this memo. Please identify two or three participants to participate in one of the institutes listed below. School division participants are asked to complete the enclosed registration form and either mail or fax a copy of the registration form to the MathVIDS contact for the region by January 12, 2000. Participants will receive a confirmation letter indicating the workshop location and directions after their registration is received. A copy of this memo is being sent to your key instructional leader, mathematics specialist, Title I coordinator and special education director. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Dr. Carol Rezba, elementary and middle school mathematics specialist, at (804) 225-2676 or the appropriate MathVIDS contact listed below.
