Acting Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: Standards of Learning Revision Health, Physical Education, and Driver Education

Last year, the Board of Education approved a work plan to revise the Standards of
Learning (SOL) in art, theatre, music, foreign language, health, physical education,
and driver education. This work plan provided for the revision of the standards
for art, theatre, music, and foreign language during Phase I, May 1999 - June 2000,
and for the revision of health, physical education, and driver education SOL in
Phase II, May 2000 - June 2001.

To facilitate the implementation of Phase II, the Department of Education is seeking
nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and
available to serve on the committee to revise the health, physical education and
driver education SOL during the last week of July 2000. The writing team will
consist of at least 20 individuals. Nominees should be teachers, principals,
administrators, content specialists, parents, or other stakeholders who have
knowledge of the content areas and experience with standards development.

Selected committee members will be asked to review related SOL revision information
prior to convening during the week of July 23, 2000. Committee members who are not
under contract with a school division will receive an honorarium. The Department of
Education will cover expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to the
revision process.

A nomination form is attached and may be duplicated as needed. You are encouraged
to nominate individuals for each discipline area listed on the nomination form.
