SUBJECT: Request for Comment on the Alternative for the Praxis I Assessments for Initial Licensure

During its March 22, 2001, meeting, two alternatives for the Praxis I assessments (reading, writing, and mathematics tests) were reviewed by the Board of Education. Attached is a copy of the Board of Education agenda item presenting the following alternatives:

  1. establish a composite score—one passing score based on the sum of all three tests—with a minimum score for each test, and
  2. establish a composite score—one passing score based on the sum of all three tests—without a minimum score for each test.
In both alternatives, the composite scores of 532 for the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and 973 for Computer-Based Test (CBT) are based on the current scores required by the Board of Education.

During the first review of this agenda item, Board of Education members requested that Virginia superintendents receive the alternatives to Praxis I. If you would like to share your comments on this proposal, please submit them no later than April 13, 2001, to Dr. Thomas A. Elliott
