SUBJECT: Announcing the 2001 Comprehensive School Improvement Institute and Post-Institute Business Program Technical Update

You are invited to participate in the Comprehensive School Improvement Institute, August 5-8, 2001, at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. The theme, "Teaching and Learning: Practices That Work," will focus on practitioners sharing methods and strategies that raise expectations and increase student achievement at the middle school, high school, and postsecondary education levels.

Additionally, an invitation is extended to teachers and administrators to participate in a Post-Institute Business Program Technical Update, August 7-9, 2001, Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center.

The purpose of the Post-Institute Business Program Technical Update is to provide an opportunity for teachers and administrators to receive a continuum of current technical information and instructional pedagogy.

The Comprehensive School Improvement Institute is funded in part by federal funds to assist in meeting the professional development requirements of the Carl D. Perkins Act and Virginia’s approved state plan.

Goals of the Professional Development Effort

The institute and technical program update will offer information and resources that focus on improving instruction and student achievement through the following:

Individuals or teams are invited to showcase promising/successful local practices that support the Virginia Standards of Learning and the High Schools That Work Key Practices. The presentation application should be returned by May 11 to:

Registration for the institute includes continental breakfast and refreshment breaks daily, dinner on Sunday, and lunch on Monday and Tuesday. Registration for the Business Program Technical Update includes meals as outlined in the announcement. The institute and Business Program Technical Update registration forms should be returned by June 8 to:

A new feature of the institute will offer six-hour and 12-hour seminars focused on skill building in the Standards of Learning content areas. These sessions will be reserved primarily for secondary teams from schools designated accredited with warning. Invitations to these schools will be mailed to principals under separate cover.

Hotel Reservations (by June 8, 2001)

Participants must call the hotel of choice, as listed in the announcement, to make lodging reservations. Lodging rates are $59 (plus tax) for a single room and $79 (plus tax) for a double/triple/quad room. Individuals are responsible for their lodging bill, including taxes and incidentals, meals that are not included in registration, and travel expenses.
