Survey on Estimated Supplemental Compensation for Public School Personnel Called to Active Military Duty |
The 2004 Virginia General Assembly
passed House Bill 318 that added the following Section 22.1-289.2 to the Code
of Virginia, regarding the compensation of public school employees called
to active military service:
22.1-289.2.
Compensation of public school employees called to active duty military
service. Public
school employees whose active duty service with the regular armed forces of the
United States or the National Guard or other reserve component has required
their absence from their full-time employment in a school division shall
receive supplemental pay as determined by and from the relevant local school
division if the military compensation of such employee is less than the regular
salary paid to such employee by the school division.
The Virginia General Assembly requested the Department of Education to report the fiscal impact of supplementing the pay of employees who are called to active military service and as a consequence receive less than the regular compensation paid by the school division. Your assistance is needed to respond to this request. Please complete the attached survey regarding supplemental pay for individuals called to active duty service with the regular armed forces, the National Guard, or other reserve component that requires their absence from their full-time employment in your school division. This does not include weekend reserve duty or summer camp.
The survey is requesting information for the 2002-03
and 2003-04 school years. The survey
requests the number of employees deployed; how many of the employees would have
been eligible for supplemental pay because they received less compensation by
the military than paid by the school division; and the estimated cost of
supplemental pay if it had been required.
If your school division has a policy for supplemental pay, please attach
a copy of the policy to the survey.
Please fax the completed survey no later than July 13, 2004,
to Mrs. Patty Pitts, director of licensure, at (804) 786-6759.
Thank you for your assistance in completing the
survey. Please contact Patty Pitts at
(804) 371-2471 if you have questions.
