and Middle School Principals Professional Development Conference on October
20-22, 2004 Williamsburg, Virginia |
The Virginia Association
of Elementary School Principals (VAESP) and the Virginia Department of
Education extend an invitation to all principals, assistant principals, and
other professional educators within your school division to participate in the
Annual Principals Leadership Conference to be held October 20-22, 2004, at the
Williamsburg Marriott, Williamsburg, Virginia. This annual, statewide event is
designed to develop and to enhance elementary and middle school administrators
leadership skills, increase their understanding of current educational issues,
and expand their knowledge base for educational change. The theme for this
years conference is Building Leadership for Life. Guest speakers, concurrent presenters, and
roundtable discussions will focus on student assessment, accountability,
instructional leadership, school management, and the ongoing challenges
associated with the provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of
2001.
Guest speakers, as well as
concurrent presenters, will address issues related to instructional leadership,
school management, and strategies to enhance teaching and learning. Implementation of the Standards of Learning,
as well as implementation of the provisions of NCLB will continue to be a focus
of the conference. The implications for
elementary and middle school administrators of the National Association of
Elementary School Principals landmark publication Leading Learning
Communities: Standards for What Principals Should Know and Be Able to Do
will be featured throughout the conference.
The pre-conference is
scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, and the conference will be held October
21-22. The opening speaker for the pre-conference is Ms. Kathleen S. Mehfoud,
who is a leading attorney working with students with disabilities. Ms. Mehfoud
will focus on Helping Students with Disabilities Meet AYP in Reading and
Mathematics. Conference speakers include Dr. Ross Greene, Dealing
with the Explosive Child; Dr. Pedro Noguera, Gaining a Perspective on
Success and Failure in American Education; and Dr. Robert Lynn Canady, A
Personal Perspective on Assessment and Achievement Over the Past 50 Years.
