Even Start
Family Literacy Competitive Grant Application |
The Virginia Department of Education announces the
availability of funds for Even Start Family Literacy programs. Under the requirements of the Even Start
Family Literacy Program, Title I, Part B, Subpart 3 of the No Child Left
Behind Act of 2001 (P.L. 107-110 as amended), funding is available through
the competitive grant application process.
The purposes of funding Even Start projects
are: (1) to improve the educational
opportunities of children and adults by integrating early childhood education
and adult education into a unified, family-centered program; (2) to help
parents become full partners in their childrens education; and, (3) to assist
children in reaching their potential as learners.
The maximum grant award for the 2005-2006 school
year will be $225,000 for each project.
A local education agency must apply in partnership
with a community-based organization for a grant. The attached information packet includes an application, required
program elements, and indicators of program quality.
Applications for the competitive grant must be
postmarked by midnight or hand-delivered no later than 4 p.m. on February 10,
2005. The application packet may be

This competitive grant application is only for new programs. Continuation grant
applications for current programs will be sent under separate cover.
One Even Start informational meeting for potential
applicants will be held on January 13, 2005, 10 a.m. 12 noon at the Virginia
Department of Education, James Monroe Building Conference Room B, in
Richmond. The purpose of this meeting
is to discuss the Even Start program and to allow applicants to ask questions
related to the application and implementation process. Since meeting space is limited,
participation is restricted to two individuals per school division. Please call the Office of
Elementary Instructional Services at 804-225-2898 by
January 6, 2005, to register for this meeting.
