SUPTS. MEMO NO. 13
March 18, 2005
ADMINISTRATIVE
TO: |
Division
Superintendents |
FROM: |
Jo Lynne
DeMary Superintendent
of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: |
Collection of Data Relative to Compliance with the Standards of Quality for 2004-2005 |
Each year as
a part of the annual report to the General Assembly on the condition and needs
of public education in Virginia, the Board of Education is required to report
the level of compliance by local school boards with the requirements of the Standards of Quality. This requirement is in response to Section
22.1-18 of the Code of Virginia. The information required to prepare this
report is not available to the Department of Education from other sources.
You will
recall that the 2004 General Assembly adopted a number of revisions to the
standards. Because there have been a
number of additions and changes to the standards, please carefully review the
standards and the indicators (a list of standards indicators, Attachment B, is
enclosed for your reference), and report on Attachment A your division's level
of compliance with the standards, which include full accreditation of all
schools. You may also want to review Regulatory Supts. Memo. No. 5, June 18,
2004 (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2004/reg005.html) relating to changes in the staffing
standards. You can expect to see
additional changes as a result of actions taken by this years General Assembly
as well as additional reporting requirements in the coming years. The complete text of the current standards
can be found on our website at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2004/inf204a.pdf.
For each item
listed on Attachment A with which your division is not in full compliance,
please provide a brief corrective action plan for complying with the requirement
and the projected date by which you will submit evidence of compliance to the
department. Department staff will use
your submission as a benchmark for monitoring compliance in the following year
to ensure that all corrective actions have been addressed. The purpose of collecting this information
is not only to report accurate information to the Board of Education and the
General Assembly, but also to assist you in your efforts to comply with all
applicable standards. Please return
Attachment A with any required corrective action plans as indicated on or
before April 29, 2005.
If you have
questions regarding this request, please do not hesitate to contact the Office
of Policy and Communications at (804) 225-2403 or by e-mail to policy@doe.virginia.gov.
