Instruction Model Content Literacy Continuum Demonstration Sites Competitive
Application |
The Virginia
Department of Education was awarded a federal grant addressing literacy
improvements for all students, but especially students with disabilities at the
middle and high school levels. One of
the project activities is to support the planning and implementation of the
Strategic Instruction Model - Content Literacy Continuum (SIM-CLC) in four
schools in the state to serve as demonstration sites for three years (2004-05
through 2006-07). The SIM-CLC program
was developed and researched by the University of Kansas Center for Research on
Learning.
The Virginia
Department of Education will fund the planning and implementation of SIM-CLC in
four schools located in two different public school divisions. The school divisions should support the
implementation of a comprehensive schoolwide approach to literacy using SIM-CLC.
Applicants are paired middle and high schools that currently provide an
effective buildingwide discipline plan, an inclusive learning community, and
evidence of some components of the Strategic Instruction Model. Applicants are encouraged to consult
extensively with their faculty and staff, parents, community organizations, and
others that will be involved in the implementation of this project
concentrating on the challenges of adolescent literacy.
On January
31, 2005, an informational meeting will be held at the James Monroe Building,
101 North 14th Street, Richmond, Virginia, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in
conference room E. A consulting team
from the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning will be present
to provide information about this literacy initiative. The application for the SIM-CLC
demonstration site will also be discussed at this meeting. After January 31, 2005, the application can
be requested by contacting the Office of Special Education Instructional
Services at (804) 786-2485. Applications
must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday,
February 25, 2005. The SIM-CLC demonstration
site is a competitive process.
