INFORMATIONAL
TO: |
Division Superintendents |
FROM: |
Jo Lynne DeMary Superintendent of Public Instruction |
SUBJECT: |
Implementation of Governor Mark R. Warners Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard and Awards Program |
We are pleased to announce that beginning January 31, 2005,
public schools can begin entering information on the interactive Governors
Nutrition and Physical Activity Web-based Scorecard. As announced in
Superintendents Memo No. 243, December 3, 2004, the Governors Nutrition and
Physical Activity Scorecard and Awards Program are components of Governor Mark
R. Warners Healthy Virginians initiative. The program provides criteria for
best practices for nutrition and physical fitness and recognizes schools for
implementing these practices through a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award. The scorecard standards can also be used to
assist schools in revising existing practices or implementing policies to
improve student health. Schools are encouraged to take advantage of this
opportunity to measure current activities against research-based practices that
support physical activity and good nutrition.
To view the Scorecard and/or participate in the awards program,
please go to http://www.healthyvirginians.virginia.gov/Students/index.cfm.
Once at the site, school teams will be asked to enter a login and password,
which have been mailed to each school principal and each division school
nutrition coordinator and health and physical education coordinator in the
commonwealth. If a school has not received a login and/or password, please
email the department at hvscore@doe.virginia.gov.
After logging on, a team will be asked to respond electronically to 34
questions pertaining to nutrition and physical activity. When all questions
have been answered, a total score will be automatically calculated and, if
appropriate, a Gold, Silver, or Bronze award will be granted to the school.
If the school does not achieve enough points to receive an
award, the school may reapply when changes in practices and/or policies have
been made. When a school receives an award, arrangements will be made by the
Department of Education to coordinate the presentation of the Governors
resolution and banner of recognition.
Should you have questions pertaining
to nutrition, please contact Lynne Fellin, acting director of school nutrition
programs, at Lynne.Fellin@doe.virginia.gov

physical activity should be directed to Vanessa Wigand, health education,
physical education, and driver education specialist, at Vanessa.Wigand@doe.virginia.gov
or (804) 225-3300. General questions regarding the implementation of the award
should be directed to Cynthia Cave, director of student services, at Cynthia.Cave@doe.virginia.gov
