Review of
the K-12 English Language Proficiency Standards of Learning: Seeking Input
from the School Community |
At its meeting on September 21, 2005, the Board of
Education approved the English Language Proficiency Standards of Learning for
review and revision if necessary, as part of its comprehensive plan for
2005-2010. At its
October 26, 2005, meeting the board approved a time line for review and
revision of the English Language Proficiency Standards of Learning and directed
the Department of Education to proceed with the review process.
As part of
the review process for the English Language Proficiency Standards of Learning,
the Department of Education is soliciting comments from classroom teachers,
administrators, curriculum supervisors, English as a second
language (ESL) educators, and others who have worked with the current
standards. Please inform personnel in
your school division that forms for comments regarding the current standards
are located on the Virginia Department of Education website at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/SOLcommentforms/
english-language-proficiency.html.
Copies of the current English Language Proficiency Standards of Learning
are available on the website at http:/www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Superintendent
/Sols/ELPstandards02.pdf. Comments
will be accepted from November 18, 2005, until December 19, 2005.
The
Department of Education is also seeking nominations from division
superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on
committees to review the English Language Proficiency Standards at a four-day
meeting March 13-16, 2006. Nominees
should be teachers, principals, administrators,
content specialists, or other educators who have knowledge of the content area
and experience with standards development.
Committee members who are not under contract with a school division will
receive a stipend. The Department of
Education will cover the expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging related to
the review process.
A nomination
form is attached to be duplicated as needed.
Please return nomination forms by December 9, 2005. Committee members will be notified of their
selection by January 6, 2006. Committee
members will be selected on the basis of grade-level expertise, experience in
ESL instruction, and balanced regional representation.
