Commemoration
of Veterans Day |
In recognition of the contributions of individual members or units
of the United States Armed Forces, the 2007 Virginia General Assembly passed
House Bill 2601. The bill asks the Department
of Education to make available to local school divisions information regarding
the commemoration of Veterans Day in the public schools. The full text of House
Bill 2601 may be found at http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?071+ful+HB2601ER.
Originally designated as
Armistice Day, since 1954, November 11 has been a day
to honor American veterans of all wars.
Schools may determine what kind of educational programs are appropriate
for their students. Among many options
for celebrating Veterans Day would be to invite veterans to speak to classes.
Many informational
resources pertaining to Veterans Day that may be useful in planning educational
activities can be found at The United States Department of Veterans Affairs website
