SUBJECT: Review of the Science Standards of Learning

At the Board of Education’s meeting on January 15, 2009, the Department of Education was authorized to proceed this spring with the review process of the Science Standards of Learning, consistent with the schedule adopted by the Board in September 2007. It is anticipated that the standards review will be completed by June 2010.

An important part of the review process for the Science Standards of Learning is the solicitation of comments from administrators, curriculum supervisors, science educators, and others who have expertise in the content of the current standards. Please inform personnel in your school division and other stakeholders that they may review the current standards at the Virginia Department of Education’s website at and comment on the current standards by e-mail at Comments will be received at this address from January 23, 2009, until February 23, 2009.

The Department of Education is also seeking nominations from division superintendents for individuals who are qualified and available to serve on committees to review the Science Standards of Learning during the summer of 2009. Nominees should be teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, or others who have expertise in the science content areas and the standards.

Committee members reviewing the Science Standards of Learning will be asked to review information related to their content areas prior to convening for a two-day meeting on July 16-17, 2009, in Richmond to review the standards. Committee members will be eligible to receive recertification points, pending the approval of their school division. The Department of Education will cover expenses for mileage and meals. Lodging will also be covered for those participants who must travel more than 75 miles to the meeting location.

A nomination form, to be duplicated as needed for interested individuals, is attached. Please return nomination forms by March 2, 2009. Committee members will be notified on or before April 3, 2009. Committee members will be selected on the basis of expertise and experience in science and balanced regional representation.
