FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Approved Cut Score for the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA)

On January 14, 2010, the Board of Education approved a cut score of 163 for the revised version of the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA). This assessment is the prescribed assessment for all individuals who are seeking an initial endorsement in administration and supervision to serve as principals and assistant principals in Virginia public schools as required in the Licensure Regulations for School Personnel (8VAC20-22-590). The SLLA is administered by the Educational Testing Service.

Individuals seeking an initial endorsement in administration and supervision who are interested in serving as central office instructional personnel are not required to take and pass the SLLA. Their endorsement will be for administration and supervision – central office only.

The revised SLLA (test code 1011) was administered in other states beginning in September 2009. The test was first administered in Virginia earlier this month. The cut score of 163 will apply to all candidates for endorsement who submit results for this assessment.

Virginia will continue to accept passing scores on the old version of the SLLA (test code 1010) that was last administered in Virginia in October 2009. The cut score for old version of the assessment is 165.

If you have questions about this assessment, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. James Lanham, director of teacher licensure and school leadership, via email at or by telephone at (804) 371-2471.
