SUBJECT: K-12 Science Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 Science SOL Institutes to be held in October 2010 at four sites in the Commonwealth. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state in collaboration with the Virginia Science Education Leadership Association (VSELA), the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST), and Longwood University.

The K-12 Science SOL Institutes are targeted professional development opportunities in a train-the-trainer model that provide:

Participants may include division-level leaders, science supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, and building administrators. Registration is limited to four participants from each school division with each participant to attend one training session that is designated by each of the following grade bands: K-2; 3-5; 6-8; and 9-12.


The Institute for Teaching Through Technology and Innovative Practices (ITTIP) at Longwood University, will manage registration. The registration process can be completed online at Confirmation of registration will be sent prior to the meeting day. Ideally, the participants from a school division will attend at the same location. Participants may select one training session offered from 8:45 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the following locations:

Lunch will be provided.  School divisions are encouraged to cover lodging and travel expenses for division participants for the training Institutes, as the cost is not assumed by the VDOE.
