SUBJECT: Guidance Document-Supporting the Identification & Achievement of the Twice-Exceptional Student: Frequently Asked Questions

In an effort to provide assistance to school division staff and parents in the identification and instruction of students who are identified as gifted and also have an identified disability, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce that a guidance document titled, "Supporting the Identification and Achievement of the Twice-Exceptional Student: Frequently Asked Questions," is now available on the Virginia Department of Education's Web site at
The resource document has been developed jointly by the Office of Special Education and Student Services and the Office of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction Gifted Education. This document addresses questions about twice-exceptional students with respect to the recently revised Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia and the Virginia Regulations Governing Educational Services for Gifted Students.

Professional development sessions to answer questions and provide technical assistance for special education directors and gifted education coordinators will be scheduled during regional special education directors' or gifted education coordinators' meetings. Additional information on those sessions will be provided in the near future.
