SUBJECT: Career & Technical Education New Teacher Institute

The New Teacher Institute is designed for career and technical education teachers needing to satisfy the Methods of Teaching or Curriculum and Instruction requirement for teacher licensure, or the Virginia Board of Nursing "Train the Trainer." The Institute is scheduled for Monday, July 18, through Friday, July 22, 2011.; The purpose of the New Teacher Institute is to provide assistance and staff development for teachers who come from business/industry to teach career and technical education in public schools. This training is designed to help the new teacher transition from the workplace to the classroom.

The New Teacher Institute addresses methods of teaching, testing, evaluation, curriculum design, and issues relating to success in the classroom. The Institute will be conducted by Dr. Roger Mackey, professor at the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia, upon completion of the course, will award three semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit. Pre-registration is required. Applicants should submit the registration form to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) by Friday, June 17, 2011. Teachers may pay the tuition during registration at the CTE New Teacher Institute (see Attachment A).

The school division(s)/participant(s) will cover the cost of the course and travel expenses. The VDOE will provide double occupancy lodging for participants, breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks.

If reimbursement is sought from Perkins funds for the cost of tuition, the reimbursement is not allowed for teachers seeking licensure. It is allowable for licensed teachers being sent at the CTE Administrator's request to improve instructional techniques.
