SUBJECT: Public Comment Period for K-12 Mathematics Textbooks

On May 19, 2011, the Virginia Board of Education accepted for first review the list of proposed recommended textbooks for K-12 mathematics. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has provided these lists on its Web site at

The Virginia Board of Education is now seeking public comment on these textbooks and intends to review and approve mathematics textbooks for use in the public schools in the Commonwealth. Lists of approved textbooks will be made available on the Department’s Web site following the Board of Education’s action on the recommended textbooks. It is anticipated that the Board of Education will act on the recommended textbooks on July 28, 2011.

Review copies of all textbooks submitted for the current adoption cycle are available for public examination at various sites around the Commonwealth between May 20, 2011, and June 20, 2011.

Individuals are invited to examine the proposed recommended textbooks for K-12 mathematics at the examination sites and to submit written comments. Comments may be faxed to the VDOE at (804) 786-1703 or sent via mail to Michael Bolling, mathematics coordinator, Office of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction, Virginia Department of Education, P. Comments will be received through June 20, 2011.
