State seal, Commonwealth of Virginia

Department of Education

August 12, 2011

TO: Division Superintendents

FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Commemorating Veterans Day on November 11, 2011, in Virginia with a Moment of Silence

The 2011 General Assembly passed House Joint Resolution 608, which requests that the Governor call upon citizens of the Commonwealth to observe Veterans Day with a moment of silence at 11 a.m.  This moment of silence would be in honor of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who “valiantly served this nation and mankind during World War I and subsequent wars.”

House Joint Resolution 608 also requires that the Director of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Executive Director of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia notify their respective constituents of the contents of this resolution and the request to the Governor that he lead and encourage citizens to pause for a moment of silence on November 11, 2011.

A copy of this resolution is attached to this memorandum.  We encourage all schools to pause in remembrance of the sacrifices and contributions of those who served in the United States Armed Forces.
