SUBJECT:  K-12 Mathematics Standards of Learning Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 Mathematics Institutes to be held in September and October 2011 at four sites in the Commonwealth. These Institutes are targeted professional development opportunities offered by the state in a train-the-trainer model.  The Institutes will continue implementation support of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL), framed by the five goals for students becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations.  The Institutes will provide:

Participants may include division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, and building administrators. Registration is limited to four participants from each school division with each participant to attend one training session that is designated by each of the following grade bands:

Virginia Tech’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will manage registration. The registration process can be completed online at  Participants may select one training session offered from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the following locations:

Lunch will be provided for participants.  School divisions are encouraged to cover travel expenses and lodging, if needed for division participants for the training Institutes, as the cost is not assumed by the VDOE.
