FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) received a grant from the United States Department of Education to provide partial financial support through the Candidate Subsidy Program for individuals interested in seeking National Board Certification. Virginia teachers who are interested in applying for a $1,250 subsidy grant for National Board Certification are invited to submit the attached 2011 Subsidy Grant Application to the Division of Teacher Education and Licensure. Applications should be submitted to the Virginia Department of Education as soon as possible but must be received no later than Monday, October 3, 2011.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards that was created in 1987 will offer 25 certificate areas for 2011. This is a voluntary certification process for teachers designed to complement, not replace, initial state licensure. Additional information about the National Board Certification process is available at the NBPTS Web site: http://www.nbpts.org.
Individuals interested in seeking a National Board Certification Subsidy Grant must have met the following eligibility prerequisites:
Applicants, if selected for a grant, will be responsible for the remaining fees. If the number of requests for subsidy grants exceeds the funds available, priority will be given to eligible grant applicants who are employed in hard-to-staff schools. Grants are contingent upon available funding.
Please submit applications directly to Dr. Mark Allan, director of licensure, Division of Teacher Education and Licensure, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia 23218-2120 or by fax at (804) 530-4510. The Department of Education will notify individuals whether they have been selected to receive a subsidy grant no later than mid-October.
If you have any questions regarding this application process, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Mark Allan, via e-mail at Mark.Allan@doe.virginia.gov or by phone at (804) 371-2471, or Ms. Eleanor Joyce, coordinator of National Board Certification, at Eleanor.Joyce@doe.virginia.gov or (804) 692-0172.
