TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce that the Virginia Community College System is offering the Virginia Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) at a reduced cost of $30 per assessment (from $45). The CRC has been approved by the Board of Education as an industry recognized credential that may substitute for the student-selected verified credit toward graduation requirements. Reimbursement for the CRC assessments is a permissive use of state funds for the career and technical education student industry certifications.
High school students who complete a career and technical education program may take the CRC which consists of three ACT WorkKeys assessments: Reading for Information, Locating Information, and Applied Mathematics. To receive the reduced pricing, the school division must proctor the CRC assessments. Proctor training will be provided to school divisions at no cost by the community colleges. The community colleges will then receive the completed assessments from school divisions, score the assessments, and track the student data for the school divisions.
Please note, the division career and technical education administrators will be provided more information about the CRC under separate cover.
For more information on how to receive the reduced pricing, please contact a community college CRC coordinator (refer to Attachment A). If you have questions about the CRC and reimbursement for credentialing, please contact Gordon Creasy, specialist for industry certification, at Gordon.Creasy@doe.virginia.gov or 804-225-3119.
