TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 English Language Arts Standards of Learning (SOL) Institutes to be held in July-August 2012 at eight sites throughout the Commonwealth. These are professional development opportunities provided by the state.
The K-12 English Language Arts SOL Institutes will provide training that focuses on the major changes made between the current 2002 K-12 English Language Arts SOL and those of the newly-adopted 2010 K-12 English Language Arts SOL. Registration is limited to four participants from each school division. Participants should include English Language Arts supervisors, elementary, middle school, and high school teachers. Participants will attend a general session and have a choice of four different breakout sessions with either an elementary or secondary focus. Concurrent sessions spotlight strands in the 2010 English Standards of Learning: writing, reading nonfiction, research, and media literacy.
Registration – The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage registration. The registration process can be completed online at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/esoli/.
