COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
May 18, 2012
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the Teacher Evaluation Summer Institutes to be held at nine different locations throughout the Commonwealth during June, July, and August 2012. Each Institute will be held for two and one-half days. These Institutes will provide targeted technical assistance and professional development opportunities to school divisions in the implementation of the Board of Education’s recommended model teacher evaluation system.
The Teacher Evaluation Summer Institutes will provide support to central office supervisory personnel and principals in the implementation of the 2011 Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers, present specific training in the evaluation of Standard 7 - Academic Progress, and build school division capacity to provide effective training to school principals in the evaluation of teachers. A train-the-trainer model will be used as Institute content is delivered to participants. School divisions are invited to send a team of three school division personnel who will return to their respective school divisions and train principals and teachers using the content and materials from the Institutes. School divisions are encouraged to send a team member who is familiar with working with teachers of English language learners and teachers of students with disabilities.
Each Institute site will have a maximum of 60 participants. Priority registration will be provided to division personnel and principals from divisions within the region of each Institute site; however, if space permits, participants may attend an Institute outside of their regions. An additional Institute to be held in Charlottesville has been designated as an overflow site for participants who may not be able to attend the Institute within their regions. A waiting list will be maintained for each Institute site, and individuals on the waiting list will be contacted if space becomes available.
Registration – The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Tech will manage registration. The registration process can be completed online at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/eval. Online registration will close on June 11, 2012. A confirmation of registration will be sent via e-mail to registered participants.
