As part of the Virginia Department of Education’s ongoing effort to ensure compliance with professional development requirements under Section 1111(2)(C) and Section 3115(C)(2) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), a fall professional development Institute for Title III program coordinators and K-12 educators of English language learners (ELLs) will be offered. The Institute, titled What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English, will be held at the following two sites on the dates specified below:

The purpose of the Institute is to provide participants with strategies to increase proficiency in reading for ELLs at the elementary level. Registration for each site is limited to 50 participants.
The Office of Continuing and Professional Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) will manage online registration. Participants may register online for the Institute at: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/reg/vdoepro.
Registration costs, materials, breakfast, lunch, and breaks will be provided for all participants. Additionally, a limited block of hotel rooms will be reserved at the state rate for participants requiring an overnight stay. The lodging cost will be master-billed to the Virginia Department of Education upon departure for those outside of a fifty mile radius of the training site. It is the responsibility of attendees to make their own reservations. Please contact the hotels listed above directly to make a room reservation. Reference “Virginia Department of Education What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English Institute” when making the reservation.
Evening meals, parking, and travel costs are the responsibility of the participants. However, these expenses are authorized activities and may be charged to local Title I, Part A; Title II, Part A; or Title III, Part A budgets.
