SUBJECT:  Reporting of Founded Child Abuse/Neglect Complaint to School Boards

The Virginia Department of Social Services has informed the Virginia Department of Education of a change in law as regards to the requirement of local social services departments to report founded complaints of child abuse or neglect by individuals employed by school divisions.  On March 18, 2013, the Virginia General Assembly approved HB 2193 that amends §63.2-1505 of the Code of Virginia to read (at B.7):

“If a report of child abuse and neglect is founded, and the subject of the report is a full-time, part-time, permanent or temporary employee of a school division located within the Commonwealth, (the local social services department shall) notify the relevant school board of the founded complaint…”
