SUBJECT:  Analysis of Student Performance on the Spring 2013 End-of-Course (EOC) Mathematics and Reading Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests

The information in this memo was communicated via a Superintendent’s E-mail dated October 31, 2013.

Statewide results for the spring 2013 End-of-Course (EOC) Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and EOC Reading tests have been analyzed to determine specific content that may have challenged students.  In order to support preparation of students for the SOL assessments for these courses, PowerPoint presentations have been developed to provide information about the content for which student performance was weak or inconsistent.  Any examples provided within the presentations are not SOL test items and are not meant to mimic SOL test questions.  Instead, they are intended to provide educators with further insight into the concepts that challenged students statewide.

It is important to note that the SOL and examples highlighted in the presentations should not be the sole focus of instruction, nor should these suggestions replace the data that teachers or school divisions have collected on student performance.  Rather, this information provides supplemental instructional information based on student performance across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The PowerPoint presentation for EOC Algebra II will be available by November 15, 2013.

PowerPoint presentations for grades 3-8 mathematics and grades 3-8 reading are tentatively scheduled to be available by February 28, 2014.  School divisions will be notified when these presentations are available.
