COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA
Department of Education
June 13, 2014
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
The Virginia Public School Authority closed on the issuance of $6.0 million in Notes (i.e., five-year bonds) to fund the School Security Equipment Grant program for the 2014-2015 school year on May 22, 2014.
Because these grant funds are awarded competitively based on applications submitted by school divisions and regional programs to the Department of Education, school divisions and regional programs are not guaranteed to receive a grant in years the program is funded. You will be notified in September 2014 if your division or regional program has been awarded a grant for the 2014-2015 school year based on applications submitted by the August 1, 2014, deadline.
In order to facilitate the installation of school security equipment during the summer months and to expedite the spend-down of these grant funds, effective with the 2014-2015 grants, school divisions and regional programs may apply for grants to reimburse school security equipment expenditures incurred on or after May 22, 2014. Such expenditures must otherwise meet all existing program guidelines and application criteria and be approved by the Department of Education for funding. The program guidelines and application form will be updated to allow for the eligibility of school security equipment expenditures incurred on or after the closing date of each annual Notes issuance.
Additional information will be sent to school divisions soon regarding the 2014-2015 grant application process. If you have questions in the meantime concerning this grant program, please contact Hunter Barnes at (804) 225-2035 or via e-mail at Hunter.Barnes@doe.virginia.gov, Vijay Ramnarain at (804) 225-2035 or via e-mail at Vijay.Ramnarain@doe.virginia.gov, or June Eanes at (804) 225-2037 or via e-mail at June.Eanes@doe.virginia.gov.
