SUBJECT: Call for Nominations for Board of Education Advisory Committees: 2015-2018 Term

The Virginia Board of Education is seeking nominees to serve a three-year term on advisory committees appointed by the Board.

The Board of Education currently has five advisory committees.  Please note that for some of the advisory committees, specific categories of expertise or geographic representation are required by state or federal law or regulation.  For all committees, the Board of Education seeks to have geographic representation among the appointees.  Incumbents may be reappointed to a second full term.

The advisory committees and the current vacancies are listed below.  The terms will begin in July 2015 and end in June 2018 unless otherwise noted.

Advisory Board of Teacher Education and Licensure
Four Vacancies – Nominees are being sought in the following categories:

1. Virginia Accredited Nonpublic School Classroom Teacher
    
2. Secondary Classroom Teacher in a Virginia Public School [preference given to Region 6]
   
   
3. Faculty Member in a Teacher Preparation Program, Who May Represent the Arts and Sciences, in a Public Regionally Accredited Virginia Institution of Higher Education  [preference given to Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8]
   
   
4. Faculty Member in a Teacher Preparation Program, Who May Represent the Arts and Sciences, in a Private Regionally Accredited Virginia Institution of Higher Education [preference given to Regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8] to fill an unexpired term – July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2016

State Special Education Advisory Committee
Five Vacancies – Nominees are being sought in the following categories:

1. A  representative of another state agency involved in the financing or delivery of related services to children with disabilities
   
   
2. Parent representative, Region 2
   
   
3. Parent representative, Region 3
   
   
4. Parent representative, Region 7
   
   
5. Parent representative, Region 8

(Parent representatives on the SSEAC must be parents of children with disabilities within the ages of birth through 26 during their terms of appointment.)

Advisory Committee on Adult Education and Literacy
Four Vacancies – Nominees are being sought in the following categories:

1. A representative of business/industry
   
   
2. A representative of one of the following:  Virginia Community College System, Virginia Employment Commission, or Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services
   
   
3. A regional Adult Education Program Manager
   
   
4. An Adult Education Regional Specialist (note: this vacancy is to fill an unexpired term: July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2017)

Virginia Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee
Six Vacancies – Nominees are especially sought for representation in the following career sectors:  Architecture and Construction; Arts, Audio/Visual Technology and Communications; Health and Medical Sciences; Hospitality and Tourism; Advanced Manufacturing – Energy Industry; and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics. 
Priority consideration will be given to representation from Regions 6, 7, and 8.

Virginia Advisory Committee for the Education of the Gifted
Five Vacancies – Nominees are especially sought for representation as gifted coordinators.

Division superintendents and other individuals and organizations are invited to recommend nominees to fill current vacancies for each advisory committee as noted above.  Persons are also welcome to nominate themselves.  Nominee submissions will be reviewed, and a slate of recommended members will be submitted to the Board of Education in May 2015.

Article nine, Section 2, of the Bylaws of the Virginia Board of Education adopted in September 2004, states that advisory committees shall be composed of persons who represent the views and interests of the general public and who are known to be qualified to perform their duties.  Personnel of the Department of Education may be appointed to the committee, as members or as consultants.  Unless otherwise prescribed by state or federal law or regulations, all appointments to an advisory committee shall be made by the Board upon the recommendations of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Article sixteen, Section 4, of the bylaws goes on to state that appointments to an advisory committee shall be for a term of three years.  Members of an advisory committee may be appointed to a second consecutive three-year term, but shall not be eligible to serve for more than six consecutive years.
