TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Revised National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP®) Certification Examination Content Outline

Effective January 1, 2016, Pearson Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) will begin administering the new knowledge (written) examination with slight changes based on the revised NNAAP content outline.  This revision is the result of findings from the 2014 Job Analysis and Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Study of Nurse Aides published by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and content review meetings conducted mid-2015.

The revised NNAAP exam content outline is available on the Pearson VUE nurse aide Web site located at and in all online candidates’ handbooks.  Further, score reports will not be disseminated at the nurse aide test sites.  To receive scores promptly, candidates must provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the evaluator at the test site during check-in.

The revised NNAAP examination reflects both Pearson VUE and the NCSBN’s ongoing commitment to ensure the NNAAP remains a valid instrument for accessing the competency of individuals seeking to become certified nurse aides.  Under a separate cover, this information will be provided to career and technical education administrators and nurse aide program directors to share with instructors.

If you have any questions, please contact Michele R. Green-Wright, specialist for health and medical sciences and related clusters, Office of Career and Technical Education, at or by telephone at (804) 225-3119.
