Interpreting the Role of the Principal: Standards of Accreditation Regulations

WHEREAS the Board of Education has adopted revised Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia; and
WHEREAS the newly revised accreditation standards place emphasis on raising achievement standards for students, increasing the requirements for graduation from high school, increasing instructional time, linking statewide accountability tests to Virginia’s nationally acclaimed Standards of Learning, and establishing a school report card for parents and the school community; and
WHEREAS the implementation of the newly revised accreditation standards require the concerted effort of all professionals within the school community: teachers, administrators, principals, support staff, and other professionals who deal daily with schoolchildren in Virginia’s public schools; and
WHEREAS the revised accreditation standards specify the crucial role for the school principal, the professional teaching staff, and the support staff in providing the instructional leadership necessary to implement the standards; and
WHEREAS it is the intent of the Board, in specifying the role of the principal in Section 8 VAC 20-131-210, that the principal shall seek to ensure that all students are provided the opportunity to learn;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education shall interpret Section 8 VAC 20-131-210, Role of the Principal, that the principal shall seek to ensure that all students are provided the opportunity to learn.
