Advisory Committees

Advisory committees are composed of members who have volunteered their time, talents, and knowledge to help strengthen educational programs. Members are appointed by the Board of Education to serve three-year terms of service. Each advisory committee develops its own program of work based on the needs of the program served. The committees meet three to four times a year and will make an annual report to the Board of Education on its recommendations for consideration and action.

Call for Nominations

The Virginia Board of Education (Board) is seeking nominees for a vacancy on the Board’s Advisory Committees. A full list of open seats is available below.

Please note that, by state or federal law or regulation, some of the vacancies on advisory committees require specific categories of expertise, qualifications, or geographic representation (map of the VDOE Superintendent’s Regions). 

Members of advisory committees do not receive compensation for their service but may be reimbursed for travel expenses in accordance with state travel guidelines set forth by the Department of Accounts.  

Educators, parents, administrators, and other individuals are invited to apply by completing this nomination form by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Early Childhood Advisory Committee

•  Business owner or employee of a business within the state of Virginia that is not within the early childhood care and education sector (term expires on June 30, 2027)
• Administrator, employee, or board member of an early childhood care and education entity that is license-exempt as a religious institution pursuant to § 22.1-289.031 of the Code of Virginia (term expires on June 30, 2027) 

State Special Education Advisory Committee

• A representative of private schools for students with disabilities (term expires June 30, 2028)
• A local school division superintendent (term expires June 30, 2028)

Virginia Advisory Committee for Advanced Learning

• Region 5 employee or administrator affiliated with Gifted or Advanced Academic Programming (term expires June 30, 2028)
• Region 6 employee or administrator affiliated with Gifted or Advanced Academic Programming (term expires June 30, 2028)
• Region 8 employee or administrator affiliated with Gifted or Advanced Academic Programming (term expires June 30, 2028)
• Region 7 parent representative (term expires June 30, 2028)
