Enrollment & Demographics
Fall Membership Reports
VDOE annually collects statistics on the number of students enrolled in public school on September 30. This report, known as Fall Membership, is submitted by each school in Virginia that officially enrolls students (i.e. student records are maintained on a Virginia teacher's register or automated system).
School-Age Population Estimates for Sales Tax Distribution
The school age population is updated each July 1 and used for the distribution of sales tax revenue to local school divisions. The estimate is provided by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.
Special Education Child Count
School divisions are required to report an unduplicated count of students with disabilities receiving special education on December 1 or the closest school day to December 1 for state funding and federal reporting under provisions the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B.
Home Schooled Students & Religious Exemptions
School divisions report the number of students who have obtained an excuse from school attendance by reason of bona fide religious training or belief as well as the number of students whose parents have notified the division superintendent – by August 15 – of their intention to provide home instruction.
