Join & Get Open!
#GoOpenVA is Virginia's home for OER! It's a growing community of educators and education partners working together to help teachers personalize learning and address the learning goals of the Profile of a Virginia Graduate.
Refer to the #GoOpenVA: Quick Guide to Open Educational Resources (OER)-This is a PDF document. to get started.
#GoOpenVA is a collaborative initiative that enables educational entities throughout Virginia to create, share, and access openly-licensed educational resources (OER, also known as open education resources). OER are free digital materials that can be used or modified to adjust to student needs; they are openly-licensed unhampered by many traditional copyright limitations. These materials are housed on a cloud-based system. #GoOpenVA encourages all Virginia educators and learners to create, share, and use digital resources with the end goals of providing equitable access to great learning materials throughout the state, and supporting new approaches to learning and teaching for all Virginians.
Through this initiative and in partnership with the Office of Educational Technology’s #GoOpen campaign Virginia seeks to become a national example of the power and promise of open educational resources.
#GoOpenVA opens to all on January 24, 2020.
Access to Professional Learning for #GoOpenVA
We offer a self-paced online course, Introduction to OER, through Virtual Virginia. It is free for any educator in Virginia, and will take about 4 hours or so to complete (though you do not need to do it all at once). Please go to Virtual Virginia Professional Learning page to register. Note that you may not get your registration information for a day or two after signing up.
You can also access materials to create a local face-to-face or blended professional learning opportunity in your own area by using the Workshop in a Box materials located on the VSTE Google site. Four Modules are planned (Foundation, Curation, Customization, and Creation) with the Foundation Module already posted and the rest scheduled to be published by the end of May 2020. There are also some general resources for providing information about OER and #GoOpenVA for leadership and the general public.
Keep up to date by following @goopenva on Twitter, or checking out the hashtag #GoOpenVA.
Also, a fairly extensive Help Center is located directly on the #GoOpenVA site.
Support for State Education Initiatives
The state’s Virginia is for Learners initiative highlights the need for students to have learning experiences that go deeper than superficial content knowledge. Although content is one component of learning, the “5 C’s” (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship) are just as important in developing college, career, and life readiness competencies. Students should be life-ready at the end of their K-12 education journey, able to be successful at whatever path they follow. In order to support the type of education needed for deeper learning, teachers need access to materials that fit the needs of many different students at different times and in different ways. This personalized learning approach requires flexibility that is not available with most traditional classroom materials. #GoOpenVA allows teachers to support each other by sharing a wide variety of digital materials that they know will work.
Mission, Vision, & Goals
In order to foster and sustain an educational environment to openly exchange and access meaningful, real-world, personalized learning experiences, the GoOpenVA initiative will:
- Increase awareness of the benefits and uses of Open Educational Resources (OER).
- Establish a community of practice to foster, create, share, and leverage Open Educational Practices (OEP).
- Understand state and division level use of OER and how to support further implementation.
- Encourage alignment of OER efforts with local and state strategies.
- Acknowledge school division efforts to implement OER.
Representatives from around the state meet as the #GoOpenVA Advisory Committee to provide guidance to #GoOpenVA.
