Earn college credit while completing your high school education.

What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment (DE) lets high school students take college courses that also count toward high school graduation.

For homeschool and private school students, participation depends on agreements with local colleges or access through Virtual Virginia.

How Can Students Participate?

Private School Students

  • May take DE courses through an agreement between the private school and a local college
  • Courses can be offered at the high school, at the college campus, or online
  • Tuition is usually the responsibility of the family unless the private school provides support

Homeschool Students

  • May enroll directly in DE courses through a local community college
  • Must apply as a non-degree-seeking student and meet placement or GPA requirements
  • Tuition is generally paid by the family unless supported by local programs or scholarships

Special Opportunities

College and Career Ready Virginia (CCRV)

CCRV guarantees public school students access to no-cost DE pathways (Passport and UCGS). For private and homeschool students, CCRV pathways may not be automatically funded. Families should confirm options with their local community college.

Virtual Virginia Dual Enrollment

Homeschool and private school students can take asynchronous online DE courses through Virtual Virginia, in partnership with Virginia’s Community Colleges. These courses are fully transferable under the Passport and UCGS.

Support for Students

Homeschool and private school students can access many of the same supports as public school peers:

  • College advising services through the partner community college
  • Disability services offices for accommodations (students with IEPs or 504s should request support directly from the college)
  • Tutoring or learning support programs, where available

Families should work closely with the community college to understand available resources.

FAQs

  • Do homeschool or private school students get free dual enrollment? Not always. CCRV guarantees no-cost access for public school students. Homeschool and private school students usually pay tuition, though some divisions or colleges may offer reduced rates.
  • How do I register? Homeschool students register directly with the local community college. Private school students typically register through their school’s agreement with the partner college.
  • Will credits transfer? Most general education DE courses transfer to Virginia public colleges. Check specific courses at TransferVirginia.org.
  • Can DE courses count toward high school graduation? Yes. Families should decide how to apply DE courses toward homeschool graduation or check private school policies.
